I’m also from Tainan. The lagoons, mangroves, and salt fields along the west coast were places I often visited with my family as a child—open, quiet, and filled with bright sunlight. During the design phase, I spent a lot of time in the library, and found myself drawn to book designs from the 1950s to 70s, in both Japanese and Chinese contexts—their modest textures, simple structures, and materials that have gradually fallen out of fashion.
So when designing this book, I wanted to bring in something “old”: using Leathac paper for the cover, along with woodfree paper, kraft paper, and rough light grey stock, while also referencing symbols often found in older books. I imagined the paper-cutting works by Tainan’s aunties—how, within these materials, their vitality and sense of play could be reactivated.
