“Koh Tsit Kang” sits between two Mazu temples on the busiest street by the harbor, having witnessed the area’s cycles of change. Once the Nanfang’ao Theater, later “Jih Hsin Hotel,” and then “The New Days,” each period brought a different character to the space. What remains unchanged is the constant rhythm of fishing boats, and the air filled with the scent of the sea.
During the process, I stayed here on and off for nearly a month. Though not far from the city, the place feels distant—almost like the edge of the world. Alongside the background of the new owner, a long-time local practitioner of community building, this brought about a subtle sense of independence.
Before it became the final icon, the creature was simply the most instinctive sketch among many. In the end, it felt right to keep it.
Now taking on a new role, the space is not only a hotel, but also a place for local exchange. The identity takes the form of a three-legged orange creature, echoing the shape of the harbor—like tentacles extending outward—reaching toward people, culture, and the everyday flavors of this place.
