Formosa Rice

nature living, better rice
.
This packaging project began with Mao Sheng, who has spent years seeking out agricultural products grown with care for the land across Taiwan.

These two 150g rice packs come from Changbin, Taitung — Kakawan, its old Amis name, means “lookout.” Between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Range, the landscape feels remote, quiet, and self-contained.

Grown by young people returning home, the rice was made for gift shop shelves — small portions, easy to bring back, offering a taste of Taiwan’s landscape and terroir.

Printed in a single spot color on naturally textured paper, the packaging features cut-out forms of two local species — the Formosan muntjac and the yellow swallowtail butterfly — revealing the rice inside while keeping the design simple, honest, and clear.
